Jim Flowers, Scoutmaster
Troop 1011 is a part of the Boy Scouts of America, a time-honored organization that has been at the heart of young American men since 1910. Presidents, Congressmen, governors, CEO’s - our leaders, past and present, have been shaped by their experience as Boy Scouts. One doesn't need to look far to see the imprint that Boy Scouts has made on our community and our nation. In fact, almost all footprints on the moon were made by a former boy scouts.
As your son joins our troop, he will take part in traditions that will encourage him to grow mentally, physically and spiritually. He will walk the trails, tie the knots, and pledge the oath like thousands before him. He will grow in fellowship, share in life lessons, and become a man as you stand by his side over the next few years. Indeed, we encourage you to be the most important part of his journey through our scouting program.
Parents are a crucial part of the Scouting success. Today there are more than 920,000 Boy Scouts in 42,000 troops led by 520,000 adult leaders. Experience has shown us that the boys, who make the most of Scouting, are those whose parents are also actively involved. While these young men take responsibility for their troop and activities, it is up to us as adults to guide them through the process and nurture them as they learn the merits of such responsibility.
Our troop never turns its back on civic responsibility. We assist M.U.S.T. ministries and Mt. Bethel UMC with food and clothing collections, place flags on the graves of our fallen heroes at the Marietta National Cemetery, and participate in other civic and church activities as an outward, visible part of our commitment to God and our community.
I can think of no other organization that can gives me a greater sense of pride and honor as being an adult leader and participating in Troop 1011. Though I've said the Scout Oath a thousand times, I still feel goose bumps when my voice is joined by the 100 plus youth members of our troop. Even more exciting is to see these young men helping each other, learning together, and growing through their experiences.
On behalf of the adult and youth members of Troop 1011, we would like to invite you to experience these cherished moments firsthand. Let me encourage you to attend the troop meetings on Monday evenings, and find an opportunity to volunteer some time with the troop. Your support and enthusiasm will serve to encourage your son in his commitment, and can see him through from the Tenderfoot to Eagle Scout ranks.
Since Troop 1011 was chartered in 1972, over 45 years ago, almost 300 Scouts have reached the rank of Eagle, the highest rank attainable by youth members. We are a part of the continued success that will imprint our futures, and we are honored to be a part of the experiences your son will cherish forever.
